Found Poem for The Things They Carried

Very much in love

full of dreams

always laughing over a private joke.

Always envy,

from the other soldiers.

curious about things.

Bubbliness was suddenly gone

You come over clean,

and you get dirty,

after you're never the same

Vietnam was a powerful drug for her:

mix of unnamed terror,

unnamed pleasure.

The endorphins start to flow,

Adrenaline comes in and,

you become intimate with danger,

 wanting more

wanting to penetrate deeper,

  craving it.

Harlem Renaissance

            In the poem, Let America Be America Again, Langston Hughes uses a lot of imagery throughout it. He has many stanzas that include well written imagery. In one of his lines he says "O, let my land be a land where Liberty Is crowned with no false patriotic wealth, But opportunity is real, and life is free, Equality is in the air we breathe." He wishes that equality was for all races and everyone would be treated equally. Where African Americans get "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" guaranteed from the Declaration of Independence from all races that oppose blacks. "The millions who have nothing for our pay--Except the dream that's almost dead today" is another good line from the poem. Mr. Hughes is saying everyone that does not pay them what they deserve, or give them money has one thing that they really want, and that one thing is equality. He just wants all races to be equal and fair in the eyes of society.

            For sound devices, there is an assonance in the poem "Seeking a home where he himself is free". The assonance is in "seeking" and "free" where it is making a long e sound. Another assonance in the poem is "the steel of freedom does not stain" with "steel" and "freedom" with a long e sound as well as the last one.  A different sound device is where Mr. Hughes used an consonance. The consonance was "the dream of the dreamers dreamed--". This whole line had the words started with a d.

            There are many figures of speech in this poem. For example there is a simile, "From those who live like leeches on the people's lives". He is comparing leeches to people's lives and using the word "like" to compare these objects together. Mr. Hughes also refers to "dark Ireland's shore" and "England's glassy lea" which are allusions illustrated throughout the poem.

Modern Transcendentalist

I believe that Al Gore is a "modern transcendentalist" by his appreciation for nature, the belief in clarity and rejection of monetary standards of success, and to value imagination and intuition over reason and logic.

Al Gore loves nature. He has always had an appreciation for nature since he was young. He loved to fish and hang outdoors. His appreciation for nature has always helped him with his career in writing and making documentaries about Global Warming.

 Al Gore ran for the presidential candidate after his term of being the Vice President ended. He did not win  the election because of the popular vote during his election. Many people thought he would give up in his political career, but he showed that rejection and simplicity would not stop him.

When he was learning about Global Warming, a lot of his supporters dropped him because he believed in something that they did not see as reason and logic. The Republican cabinet used his imagination and intuition to help him loose his popular vote. The scientists that helped him produce and create The Inconvenient Truth taught him more about Global Warming and opened his mind to what is happening to the environment.

Values of Poetry

Poetry is very important to learn because you get so much from it. You get a different viewpoint from people from races, cultures, and time periods. When you start to read a poem, you learn so many things about the author and how that person expresses themselves and the views on the subject they are talking about. The poem also paints a picture, which is unique from a story being told. Poetry is also the type of writing where it is not just in black and white, people can get different opinions from each poem they read ,versus, what you may think.

American Dream

The American dream is to suceed in whatever or whoever you want to be. To be equal and not be discriminated against religion, race, and disabilites. Have a fair chance and be looked up in the same respect, not be treated differently. The American dream is also to have our children surpass us and keep gettting better as generations unfold and move forward. I mostly have the same opinions as my classmates, some of the ideas are prettly similar. My classmates went into capitalism, by how smaller companies have to compete with much bigger, well known companies and how a lot of people would rather spend more money on name brand items instead of consuming or purchasing items that were made in this community or state. A lot of people wonder if there is something like the American dream and if they can grasp and achieve it.
